How to get around the paddock?

Lifestyle

Segway, golf buggy, roller skates: what’s the best way to get around the paddock? With his vast Grand Prix experience, The Podiumist gives his advice on the best means of locomotion behind the scenes.

This year, you have picked up your pass giving access to the paddocks of a Grand Prix and you are about to wander around to satisfy your curiosity. This raises the question of what means of transport you will want for navigating this vast space. Forget about scooters and skates, the 20th century has been over for a long time and the idea is to make your exit with your dignity intact after your walk in the bowels of the circuit.

The Segway is very convenient, though not really flattering for anyone who steps onto its platform and leans forward awkwardly. Leave that to those hostesses who give out goodies and drinks. That leaves the golf buggy and the celebrity wagon. But both of them are sure ways to get yourself noticed (go for it if that’s what you want!) and are subject to serious delays in the middle of all these pedestrians. No, the simplest thing is to move about on foot, in all humility. In addition to ensuring a complete control of all the parameters of your trip, this is undoubtedly the best way not to miss anything of the show. Smelling the smells, watching the teams fussing about the cars, admiring the beautiful mechanics and tightening a few clips, that’s what you came for, remember ?
